Shopping and Supplies

Maui has lots of great shopping and places to stock up on your groceries and supplies.  If you like bigger warehouse style stores and want to get a jump start as soon as you leave the airport, a good place to stop in is Costco.  This is a good opportunity to initially stock up on snacks, bottled water (although our Maui tap water is safe to drink), soda and maybe some groceries (or other bigger items you might want including beer, wine and liquor).  There is also a Walmart a few blocks away.
Walmart     10 Puakala Place, Kahului
Costco     540 Haleakala Highway, Kahului
There is a really great grocery store just behind the Maui Kai called the Times Supermarket (a 5 minute walk towards main road), where you can get fresh meat, produce and groceries.  When in Lahaina, you can also shop at the Safeway.  Sign up for a Safeway card first at customer service (which is free), which will enable you to get the in-store sale prices on items.  They have a terrific ice cream section!

Safeway   Lahaina Cannery Mall; 1221 Honoapiilani Highway

Close to home check out the Maui Gift and Craft Fair on Sundays (AM to 2PM at the Lahaina Gateway mall in front of the new Ace Hardware (across from Safeway).  Free parking and admission.  They even have great Hawaiian  pattern face masks!
There's also a weekly swap meet / flea market and they have a great vegetable/fruit market at the back.

Restaurants and Bars

Maui Kai 806 Steps from Duke's Beach House
Depending on your budget, there are a lot of great eating places near the Maui Kai (many within walking distance).  One of our local favorites is Ono Kau Kau Mixed Plate (a combination of Chinese and local food), only a 5 minute walk at 3481 L. Honoapiilani Road (808-669-2112). Another great spot within a 5 minute walk and just a few doors down from the Times Supermarket is Pizza Paradiso (808-667-2929). There is also a new Duke's just two resorts over (a short walk through the back park) for great beach front dining.  There are also some good fine dining restaurants at the larger hotels on the Kaanapali beach 'hotel strip' (about a 5 minute drive south of us) and at Whaler's Village

Mala is upscale and ocean front in Lahaina on Front Street and is one of our new favorites as is Honu Seafood and Pizza (conveniently next door).   For food with an Asian flair, try Star Noodle or Sensei Seafood Restaurant and Sushi Bar  For upscale ocean front seafood try the Sea House Restaurant in Napili.
Maui has many Gluten Free options including Pene Pasta Cafe in Lahaina, Pizza Paradiso has GF pizza and fries, or CJ's Deli & Diner also has a GF menu.
For live nightly music, we like Fleetwood's on Front Street or Cool Cat Cafe

Our other favorite option to is explore old Lahaina for food... there are at least a dozen great restaurants on a 5 minute walk through the old whaling village (10 minute drive south from the Maui Kai).

Luau

Maui Kai 806 Luau
We recently enjoyed The Myths of Maui Luau at The Royal Lahaina Resort.  The night included a delicious all you can eat buffet, exotic complimentary cocktails like Blue Hawaiis and a multi stage prduction that featured traditional music and dance from Hawaii, Tahiti, Samoa and New Zealand.  You can book directly on-line at http://www.mythsofmaui.com or by calling (808) 661-9119.
