Your Maui Vacation Guide & Local Secrets

🌴 Aloha! We’re Jason & Gloria, your hosts at Maui Kai 806. After years of exploring Maui, we’ve gathered our favorite tips, stories, and local secrets to help you make the most of your island adventure. Whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth, we want you to feel like ohana (family) from the moment you land.

Our Story: Why We Love Maui

We first fell in love with Maui on a spontaneous trip years ago. In July 2009, Jason proposed to Gloria at The Plantation House in Kapalua, making Maui forever special to us. The sunsets, the ocean breeze, the aloha spirit—Maui captured our hearts. Now, as the owners of Maui Kai 806, we’re passionate about sharing the best of the island with our guests. From hidden beaches to the best shave ice, we want you to experience Maui like a local (with a little extra luxury!).

🌺 Did You Know? The word aloha means more than just hello or goodbye—it’s a way of life, filled with love, kindness, and connection.

Getting Here: The Journey Begins

“Getting here is part of the adventure!” Maui is easy to navigate, but a few local tips can make your arrival smooth and stress-free.

View from Maui Kai 806

Touching down at Kahului Airport (OGG) is always a thrill—warm breezes, the scent of plumeria, and the promise of adventure. We recommend picking up a lei at the airport for a true aloha welcome (and a great photo op!).

🚗 Insider Tip: If you're arriving late, call ahead to your car rental—sometimes they'll wait for you if your flight is delayed.
🍽️ Meal Stop: Arriving on Maui? Hit up TinRoof (our must-eat favorite) for a delicious local meal before heading to Maui Kai 806—just be sure to check their hours!
🛒 Shopping Tip: The only Costco, Target, and Walmart on the island are in Kahului near the airport. It's smart to stock up on essentials here before heading to West Maui—it can save you time and money later!

Address: Maui Kai Oceanfront Condos, 106 Kaanapali Shores Place, Lahaina, Maui, HI 96761

Arriving at Kahului Airport (OGG)? Get Directions via Google Maps

  • Car Rentals: All major companies at OGG (Hertz, Avis, etc.). For savings, try one of these local companies (we've used Cruisin Maui Rent-A-Car and had a great experience):
  • Ride Share: Uber, Lyft, and local shuttles (Speedi Shuttle, VIP Trans Maui) are available.
  • Public Bus: $2/ride, $4/day pass. Good for local trips, not recommended for airport transfers.
🚗 Major Rental Companies Tip: If you choose one of the major rental car companies, sign up for their rewards program and have your driver's license and credit card on file. This lets you walk directly to your car at the new OGG Car Rental facility—avoiding those long lines during peak times!
🗺️ Did You Know? The drive from OGG to Kaanapali is one of the most scenic in Hawaii—watch for whales in winter!

Eat: Savor the Flavors of Maui

Some of our best Maui memories are around the table. Whether you're craving fresh poke, a sunset dinner, or a morning coffee with ocean views, we've got you covered.

Maui Oceanfront Coffee View

We love starting our day with a local coffee and a view of the ocean. For lunch, nothing beats a plate lunch from a food truck or a poke bowl from the market. Dinner? Try a sunset meal at one of Kaanapali's oceanfront restaurants—unforgettable!
