OGG Airport and Car Rentals
Sophie and I used to reserve rental cars for pick-up at the Kahului airport (airport code OGG). We would typically reserve on-line through Alamo.com or Dollar.com although car rentals from the major operator's have increased recently. All the major car rental companies are at the Kahului airport if you prefer another company. If you decide not to rent from the airport location, you can still book a car closer to the Maui Kai as there are several car rental companies in the Kaanapali / Lahaina area as well.
Most recently we started renting from Aloha Rent A Car which is off site and requires a shuttle bus but has older cars at great rates and the savings really adds up for longer rentals. Similar secondary market car rental agencies on Maui include Manaloha Rent A Car and Kimo's Rent A Car. Keep in mind these are typically older well used vehicles.
Also gaining popularity on Maui is the Turo App but this requires renting cars from individuals of which many of which will not deliver to the airport. Great if you are looking for a specialty vehicle like a Tesla and don't mind paying a premium.
Another option is you can book one way or round trip transfer shuttles between the Kahului airport and Maui Kai. On a recent visit we took Hawaii Executive Transportation and were very happy with the ease of booking and great door to door service although it looks like they recently got taken over by Speedi Shuttle. Ride share services like UBER and LYFT have gained popularity on Maui recently and are also a good option.
The public bus is only $2.00 per ride or ask for the $4.00 day pass. The Maui Bus system is adequate to take locally around Kaanapali or into Lahaina. Although connections are generally good, I would not recommend it for longer trips or airport transportation. You can get more details and schedules at: www.co.maui.hi.us/index.aspx?NID=609
